About
500 were in attendance on the chilly, rainy day to honor the memory of
the fallen in a ceremony featuring military and civilian leaders.
Speakers
included Tracy Fortmann, the superintendent of the Fort Vancouver
National Historic Site, Major General Jeffrey Buchanan, Rep. Jaime
Herrera Beutler, Lt. Col J.D. Litton and Mayor Timothy D. Leavitt.

Veterans Day 2012
Vancouver saluted all those who have served our country Sunday in the annual Veterans Day ceremony at the Post Cemetery.
Speakers included Oregon Air National Guard Brig. Gen. Bruce W. Prunk; Col. Peter F. Norseth, commander of the 2nd Brigade, 95th Division, based at the Armed Forces Reserve Center in east Vancouver; state Sen. Ann Rivers, R-La Center; and Vancouver Mayor Tim Leavitt.
Larry Smith, Vancouver city councilor and retired U.S. Army colonel hosted the Veterans Day event. Smith and Dan Tarbell are chairmen of the Community Military Appreciation Committee, which is presenting the program.
After the ceremony, author and historian Jeff Davis offered guided tours of the cemetery, and discussed the contributions of the soldiers buried there.

Wounded Warrior Donation 2012
On October 10, 2012 Mr. Dan Tarbell, CMAC Co-Chairman presented Colonel Homas and retired Major General Berger with a check for $5000 to assist in the Wounded Warrior Project. Col. Homas was quite humbled and appreciated what CMAC and the community of Vancouver was doing for our military members. During the conversation, Col. Homas presented Mr. Tarbell with one of the military coins and also graciously accepted one in return. Homas hopes to attend a CMAC meeting here in the near future and looks forward to meeting everyone who was involved.

POW/MIA Ceremony on September 21st 2012
The observance of POW-MIA Recognition Day was held at 1:30 p.m. Friday on Vancouver’s Veterans Affairs campus at the Vietnam War Memorial Garden.
The annual observance honors more than 140,000 American service personnel who were captured and held as POWs in the past 100 years; more than 17,000 of them died in captivity.
About 82,000 service members are listed as missing in action (MIA) since the start of World War II.
Four former POWs who served during World War II were at Friday's event on the Vancouver Veterans Affairs campus, including Bowlin.
The event is sponsored by the Community Military Appreciation Committee and the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center, which includes the Vancouver VA site.
The Vancouver Community Concert Band and Fort Vancouver Pipe Band performed.

Many stirring words were spoken in the shadow of the Clark County Veterans' Memorial on Monday
The keynote speaker was U.S. Army Col. Peter Norseth, commander of the 2nd Brigade, 95th Division, which is based at the new Armed Forces Reserve Center in east Vancouver.
Other featured speakers included U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas; State Sen. Craig Pridemore, D-Vancouver; and Tracy Fortmann, superintendent of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.
Participating units includeded the 204th Army Reserve Band; 6th Marine Support Battalion; 2nd Brigade, 95th Division Color Guard; 146th Army National Guard Artillery; Buffalo Soldiers; Patriot Guard Riders; Lewis & Clark Young Marines; and the Fort Vancouver Pipe Band.
Larry Smith, Vancouver city councilor a retired Army officer who served at Vancouver Barracks, hosted the ceremony. Smith is co-chairman of the Community Military Appreciation Committee, which coordinated the event. The nonprofit group was founded to keep the area's military heritage alive after the Army left the barracks. The ceremony was sponsored by Waste Connections.

Post to Park 2012
Memorial Day's "Post to Park" event was the official closure of the East and South Vancouver Barracks as an Army Reserve base, and its transition to a national park.
The ceremony was held at the Artillery Barracks, 600 E. Hatheway Road. The renovated structure is in the West Barracks, which already is under civilian ownership and management.
The ceremony followed the 11 a.m. Memorial Day observance at the nearby Clark County Veterans' Memorial on Fort Vancouver Way and McClellan Road.
The 1 p.m. "Post to Park" ceremony observed the transfer of the East and South Barracks from the Army Reserve to the National Park Service; it became part of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.
The ceremony commemorated a U.S. Army presence that dates back to 1849. The post closure ceremony was held at the Artillery Barracks, 600 East Hatheway Road.
The Army Reserve was represented by Brig. Gen. Alton Berry, deputy commanding general of the 88th Regional Support Command, and Brig. Gen. Kurt A. Hardin, commander of the 104th Training Division, which was based at Vancouver Barracks before moving to Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
The National Park Service was represented by Chris Lehnertz, director of the Pacific West Region, and Tracy Fortmann, superintendent of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.

Our Community Salutes - April 28, 2012
The“Our Community Salutes” event on Saturday April 28, 2012 honored more than 200 high school seniors. Who have enlisted for future military service with a recognition ceremony followed by an ice cream social. This was the largest Our Community Salutes event in the Northwest.

Veterans Court Fundraiser
Eight hours of music. Two dozen classic cars. One united purpose: To help veterans who have fallen afoul of the law.
Hundreds gathered Sunday at Esther Short Park to enjoy themselves and also to raise money for the Clark County Veterans Court.
The event was just one of a half-dozen fundraisers scheduled this year to support the court. It is one of several of the county's therapeutic courts, where the emphasis is not just on punishment, but on putting people on a more successful path in life.
